Think about it if you were part of that family .

A word of warning--be sure you know WHERE you're donating to.. There's a lot of scumbags who set up faux-relief funds at the expense of others to try to profit.
Always:
-Check the company's background to make sure that they're legit
-Make sure you access donation areas through reputable sources--the best being the company itself.
-Ask around before donating. Others may have found a more direct way to send to those in need, without the middleman problem of shady characters trying to get your money.
Even at a time when your heart leads you, keep in the know, and use your brain as well, or else the money that you're sending may not go where you intended it.
This is, on my opinion, one of the most detestable practices of humanity, but it's there, and it's real. Keep an eye out.

I work with the student government at the school where I teach and we will be organizing a (hopefully!) school wide fund raising effort very soon.

The organization, Feed the Children, is taking donations for immediate purchase of bulk food to send for relief. They are one of the most highly rated charitable organizations out there with one of the lowest administrative overhead per dollar donated. I would HIGHLY recommend using them:

The link above is specifically for Hurricane Katrina victims. I know I've sent my $50.00.

Anyone who profits from other people's misery is the worst kind of scum on the planet. It's been too long since I've read Dante, so I don't remember where he put those kind of people in hell, but they belong in hell's darkest pit. Forgive my bluntness.

Are you responding to my post about Feed the Children?
Or is that just a general statement about people's greed at other's expense?

Oh my... it was certainly not directed at your post Aniewiel. I was commenting on an earlier post about fake relief organizations that pocket donations. My sincere apologies for any misinterpretation.
I just get REALLY burned up when I see people trying to profit at the expense of those who are suffering... and even worse, cause FURTHER suffering by their greed. They belong in the deepest pit of hell along with traitors (hee hee, I checked up on my "Divine Comedy").

You know I will be donating what I can to help out, to the Red Cross.
I saw something on TV earlier today that really pissed me the hell off. Today just watching the news and on CBS, this reporter was interviewing the victims of katrina who were stuck living on the interstates. He's standing there, in a nice suit, neat hair, it was obvious he was staying at a nice place away from the damaged region, obvious he'd taken a shower this morning, etc. And here he is, this stupid little fink asking these people who've just lost everything to a natural disaster...he's interviewing them, asking them how horrible it was living on the interstates. And in that big ass news van, they didn't decide to bring even a couple bottles of water to distribute. Honestly what kind of an asshole does something like that "Hey, it must really suck out here right? I mean really suck having lost everything, now sitting out here day after day with no food or water just trying to cope with possibly the worst natural disaster in the US, that just destroyed the f*** out of your homes...am I right? Does it suck? Yeah it must REALLY suck." Honestly for $20 you could've bought a big ass case of water and distributed it amongst the streets, but this guy just...reminds them of how much they've suffered, and then leaves all for an interview. Giving no rations or help to the people whatsoever. Screw CBS.
I'll be donating all that I can spare to the Katrina victims.

It is safest to donate your time, money and blood to the Red Cross. They are providing disaster relief in my area as well as MS and LA.
